View Full Version : Anyone else have both Viper and Vette?

I took them both out to stretch today. Weather was the best it's been in a while. I am always amazed at the drastic difference in the two cars. It's really surprising how much you notice it when you take them both out back to back.
I drove the GTS first and with the cold weather it was quite the white knuckle experience. The S/C GTS is brutally raw power, rough ride, tires breaking loose repeatedly (I can't keep my foot out of it hehe), ears ringing (the beast is LOUD) and just riding the ragged edge of control/not in control. 20-120 in an instant. The speedo wraps over from left to right lickity-split. I spent most of the ride hunting for victims but couldnt find anyone willing to play. I left alot of rubber out there and made a huge contribution to global warming. I got back home feeling exhilerated from the adrenaline rush.
Then I climbed into the near stock Vette. After the Viper, the Vette felt extremely weak and underpowered. It just didn't seem to want to go, yet the car felt very refined. I matted the throttle to the floorand it took forever to reach 100. Just a slow lazy crawl compared to the GTS. The heads up display and the full power seats are nice. The car is way more comfortable than the GTS. There is a ton of room in the cabin and the Bose stereo system sounds killer. The Vette seemed to float on a cushion of air. It felt almost like driving a Cadillac.
Each car has it's own merits. The Vette is pure luxury compared to the Viper but from a performance perspective they are not even in the same league. The Viper owns the Vette in a race and it's not even close.
Yeah I was bored today.

You say you were bored today but it definately sounds to me like a really good way to be bored...
+++ Rep for contributing to global warming...

I haven't owned both at the same time but I have owned c5z06 and c6 and yes, both feel like pure luxury compared to the Viper.
Viper is a better performance car, but the vettes are great daily drivers.

Almost bought a vette once....early 70's model; back in the early 90's.
Almost bought lots of things. *sigh*

I had a C5Z06 and a C4 at the same time I had the viper. Big difference in the cars for sure. The C5Z was by far the best daily driver of the 3, but the Viper is more of what I am after. No frills performance. I do miss my 91 ZR1 though, that was a nice car.

Did you see the ZR-1 package that sold on Barrett Jackson this week. Someone packaged a 2009 ZR1 and a 91 ZR1 together. I think it went for around $150K for both. Pretty well bought considering what the 09s are bringing.

I thought just the 91 brought over $150k. I didnt see a combined package.

Yes, 99 GTS and 02 ZO6..
In this family, the ZO6 will stomp a mud hole in the GTS, but to be fair, it does have a blower. :D

My vettes are older C3's. The newer vettes don't do it for me and are not in the class of a Viper.

My C4 would more than likely outrun my GTS, but the GTS is more fun to drive, but the C4 has had a lot of work done to it, I put a LS1/T56 into the 'ole C4, but that wasn't enough, now it has AFR heads, and a LG G5x3 cam custom headers. I have spend entirely too much on the C4...

Yeah my Z was the same way, I had one of the first TTI twin turbo kits. It would bust the vipers ass. But I have a 10# ROE kit sitting next to me to fix that problem soon enough.

Sounds like some nice Vettes on the board.
My wife drives our Vette so we've kept it pretty tame. It just has intake, exhaust, catback and tune. The Viper has 10 pound Roe, so it's an unfair race for the Vette.

Cool. How much power is the LS1 making? Any engine bay pics?
I owned an 84 that was lightly modded but was a great looking/driving car.

I had a C4 for a while, LT1 6 speed.
It was a great car, I love the way the tranny shifted and it gave a fun car to drive in the rain.
I sold it and bought a second Viper :)

I'm guessing it's making somewhere around 400-450 at the flywheel, but it hasn't been on a dyno yet, no engine pics, yet. but they're coming, right now the car has no intake manifold or heads, or exhaust for that matter, I took that pic before dismantling the car, the Heads and FAST intake are at a local shop getting match ported. I'm also changing out the 3.07 rear gear in favor of 3.73's.. Next week sometime I should have some numbers after getting it tuned assuming the weather cooperates, before taking anything apart with a safe tune, it would break the rear tires loose in third, which takes some getting used to, considering I was use to driving the car with a basically stock L98 that might chirp the tires going into second on a good day.

Currently I have A C5 Coupe, haven't driven a Viper yet, so I wouldn't know the difference. The C5 is pretty fast for me now having 317 RWHP - I know only that much since I only have LT headers and tune done on the car. But I guess coming from a stock RWHP or 280 a 37 hp added just by headers and tune seemed to help the car a lot, plus it sounds a whole lot better. Can't wait to be in a Viper, I'm so excited and bummed since it's still 18 months away. Any member in Illinois near Chicago want to let me test drive their car?:D

You need to get someone to take you for a ride in a blown Viper.:yep: (I can't see anyone letting you drive one). NOONE drives my car, not my wife, son, Dad....NOONE. :D Mine puts down 660 rwhp and 710 rwtrq. You think your Snake bitten now, just wait.
I bought my car with the S/C already installed too, so I had a steep learning curve to get used to driving it. It scared the shit out of me when I first drove it and I still give it alot of respect.:eatpop:

I had a 91 ZR1 also, great car. I had the top end ported and polished, headers, tune, etc. Car made right around 400rwhp. It was fun, and it pulled hard all the way to 7400rpm. It would have walked my 94 RT/10 when the Viper was stock, but now with my 10# Roe/Heads/Cam its a different story. The ZR1 pulled hard up top, really hard, but the beauty of the Viper is the low end. And now with my heads, it pulls hard past up top also.
V10TT, I remember reading about your car on the ZR1 net. I wished I could have had a Haibeck 415 stroker back then. Did SGC do the engine on your old car?
