Went back to the cheap site to order the pilot bearing. They list 2 different part numbers for pilot bearings. They said to check the engine code, and if it has "EWB" as the engine type it takes one pilot bearing and if not, it takes the other.
WTF is this all about? I thought all 97 GTSs would have the same engine block/flywheel, etc.....:eatpop:

There is a local tech I know of here on the NOLA northshore that I will try to get ahold of about this. Ill see if I can get him to join up to add his expertise now and then.

Just thinking about it though, it could also be a difference in transmissions. Maybe the input shafts were different size, etc... Considering the engine code is different though who knows. Not sure if the engine code considers the entire powertrain or just the engine itself...

EWA 8.0L V10 MPI Engine
EWB 8.0L V10 SFI Engine
EWC 8.3L V10 SFI Engine
Still not sure why that would effect the pilot bearing, though.
I will work on it some more and also try to get ahold of the local Tech.

I thought I read somewhere that all of the 97s got the engine block castings from the GTS-R. Maybe it was only the GTSs that got them and that could be the different engine code?

EWA 8.0L V10 MPI Engine
EWB 8.0L V10 SFI Engine
EWC 8.3L V10 SFI Engine
......
What's the difference in EWA MPI and EWB SFI engines?

Im thinking the EWA was the truck casting for the V10. Maybe thats the difference in the pilot bearings considering it would have been mated to a different tranny. If the part is for a Viper though, it almost has to be the EWB code.

So did they put 2 different engine castings or tansmission types in 97 GTSs? I didn't think so, but they are showing both of these pilot bearings could work for 97 GTS depending on which model engine you have.

Ok Tim,
I got ahold of Jeremy (the local Viper Tech) and he is gonna join up later tonight. He informed me of some pretty interesting things that happened for the 97ish model year that I had no idea about, and so dependant on your vin (namely the last 9 digits), he can tell you what you need. When he joins up maybe you can PM your vin to him and he mentioned possibly being able to email you the service manual pages for various things.
Also, when you get to doing the install, you may want to be sure of which lines you disconnect and in what order or youll be bleeding the system via the pedal until your leg falls off...

I looked all under my hood for a plate that would tell which engine model I have and I can't find squat.
Anyone know where to look?

I dont think you can see it. Its on the back of the block to my knowledge. Im pretty sure thats why he needs to throw the last 9 digits of your vin in the computer.
You wouldnt happen to know how many O2 sensors you have would you? 4 or 5?

EWA has its heritage in the 360cid family
EWB is based of the 440 bigblock the diferences arent really noticable till you had them apart

Hey Red Snake
In 97 there were a few test engines produced. A couple of these engines were sent out in production cars. Unfortunately these engines were extremely heavy and made the cars very slow and sluggish. ..
After seeing you on the road, I think you definitely got one of these engines....
