View Full Version : Foot Well TT 76 Pics

February 6th, 2009, 10:35 AM
Here are some pics of my custom TT 76GTS set up. Welds could be cleaner, but I'm very happy the way it came out. Everything fits under the car, and is as symetrical as possible. We tried to do the WG inlet and outlet as as efficient as the space allowed.
Guy really cleaned up all the welds inside the pipes with a dremell to make sure the air flow was as smooth as possible. All pipes were heat coated inside and out.
3" mid pipes which required some frame nothcing, and 3-1/2" exhaust with 4" mufflers.
These are some pics while the car was at the shop. Car is done now, and it is waiting for a Donato Trany.
Thanks for reading.

After getting screwed before, and droping a pushrod, I decided to do things my way.
I'm not a mechanic, but I understand the system, and knew what I wanted.
I got togueter with a one man operation that has a small shop here in Miami. He buidls race engines, and does all kinds of high performance work.
I've know him for a while, so I talked to him and told him what I wanted.
He did my 510 cid, rear end, fuel system, drive shaft loop, exhaust and turbo set up. He even got himself a Tig welder to do the job.
Guy spent a lot of time cleaning up the welds, and porting the pipes inside.
The funtionality of the system, and lay out are exactly what I wanted. The motor came out kick ass, and layed out 950 rwhp on 14 lbs
and 8 deg. of timing (pump gas and no water/meth). I blew the trany, so once I get the trany back and some Flow($$) Jimmy Voorhees will come dn. and finish the tuning.
Driveablity wth the 150 lbs. injectors is like stock. Car iddles at 650 rpms. The tuner is all brains, I recommend him to anybody that wants the best tuning on your AEM Viper.. TRUST ME!
We hooked up EGTs, and Knock sensors, and will tune the "roll Racing" antilag:D
I'll post some finished up pics once I take it back to the shop to put the trany in.
I got some tricked out air intakes, that some of you are not going to be too happy with , but this is BALLS TO THE WALL HP.

Nicely done and looks good. I would love the change to do the fab and welding on one of these cars!
You said you had to do some notching of the frame. When you did that did you go back and make a patch for what you had to take out? Also what kind of engine management are you using?

Don't you weld Casey?

Yes in fact I’m a pipe fitter/sanitary welder. Which would apply perfectly to this kind of stuff. I how to fit offsets, I know fitting take offs (although probably not the same fittings used for something like this), and with sanitary welding you have to purge the pipe. If purge welding were used on piping along with TIG (which i do 90% of my welding with)for a vehicle, you would end up with a seamless appearing piece of pipe after a quick polish.
Like I said, I would love to do it. However there is no shops that do this kind of work where I live.

Guys, thanks for all the nice comments. Casey, no purge welding:sad:, I know that is the only thing this set up is missing. We did try some powder (forgot the name of if) that you are supposed to to put inside the pipes and helps the weld come cleaner. My guy tried it, but it did not help much.
He is not a welder by tray. The pipes do look very smooth inside. He grinded a lot of metal from the welds protruding into the pipes. This was done from scratch piece by piece, so it was kid of a pain to fit everything.
HE only charged me 10k labor for ALL, so I can'tcomplaint. I bought all the parts at his cost too.
The frame was boxed back toguether and painted the same OEM frame color. You can actually see the spots in the pics posted above. Frame was boxed under the 3" mid pipe on each side, and below the right side Turbo.
This guy did every thing himself, rear end (DEtroit Locker TQ differential and 2.72 gears), safety loops, fuel pumps and wiring, 510, and turbo system (mooded Heffner Headers, and from there to the intercooler piping, all new) Intercooler to motor it retains the Heffner plumbing.
Here are a couple of pics of the motor build. One of the tricks this guy does to the motors is to put screens in the oil return galleries just in case something gets loose on the top end, it is not dropped in the bottom end nad kills the motor.
I dropped a pushrod in my first 510.
drive shaft loop(pump wiring not done yet in this pic)

Here is pic of what we did the original Heffner T3 headers.
We cut the T-3 flange up to where the individual pipes merged, and welded a 3" V-band round in one end, and oval on the other to mate with all the pipes. Seems to flow very good, and there are minimal bends from the head to the V-band. I could not afford a new set of Turbo headers.

Good deal. Overall i think it looks good! Especially for a DIY type build. The purge thing is no big deal. To me if you do it your self its not crucial. That said, if i were paying a big name tuner to build me a TT setup, i would expect it.
Glad you boxed the frame back in. Whole thing came out good, when you get the car all together make sure to show us some pictures!

Car started as a Basic Gt35 Heffner set up on the stock 488 cid.
We just went from there.
Here is a teaser for the air intakes. Once I get the car back on the lift to put the trany in I will take some pics from under the car with all the stuff hooked up.

have you thought about a dry sump setup to guarantee a good oil feed back from the low mount turbo setup? Mitech make them. The vacuum also helps ring seal under boost which adds power :yep:

Well, I think it is rather pricey, but its a pretty ballin' piece as well. Give Mike a call. He's about the nicest guy in the world to talk to.
It was a pleasure to assist in this turbo setup. I see that you did your best to incorporate just about everything we talked about. Looks really good. Congrats to you and your builder on getting what you wanted. I am sure once its all 100% done and tuned, you will be very pleased indeed.

Hey - welcome to the other side :D
Dry sump is cheaper than rebuilding a motor and turbo due to oil issues :yep: Not all low mounts suffer from it, but the risk is there.
