Are any of the aftermarket shifters (for Gen II) known for rattling? Here's my problem........

I have a metallic rattle that sounds like its coming from the base of the shifter when the car is under a heavy load, particularly when I floor it in 4th, 5th or 6th gears and I'm going fairly slow (instead of downshifting). I don't hear it at all in 1st, 2nd 3rd gears.

Before you say detonation, I thought the same thing and I just about shit myself and immediately took the car back to Joe D at PBJ (my tuner). We pulled ALL of the plugs and saw NO detonation. I tried running different tunes (pump gas with no water/meth, pump gas with water/meth, race tune, etc). I am certain that the car IS NOT detonating.

My clutch is probably wearing thin. I don't know if it's stock or aftermarket but the car is hard to shift when it is cold and loosens up and shifts easy once the car is hot. I get no slip on an upper gear highway pull but if I rail on the car really hard I can smell clutch a little bit.

So bottom line is I think the rattle is a shifter issue. I have an MGW First Strike knob but I have no idea what shifter is in there as it was installed before I bought the car. Any thoughts or prior experience with rattling shifters?

Have you checked your engine and trans mounts? Do you have aftermarket poly mounts? If you have OEM mounts, I would guarantee that they are broken. Especially with a blower.
I had similar noises and all three OEM mts. were broken. Problem is that it is hard to tell unless you remove them...

Some installers of aftermarket shifters install from the top. If so, they probably drilled holes to get to the shifter bolts. Take the top boot off and make sure all four screws on the shifter are tight.

Good Luck...

BTW... Did you hear Justin got 1365 rwhp out of Dom's single turbo SRT truck?

Justin at JMB performance just dyno'd his latest SRT truck build. it is a single Turbo that made 1365 rwhp and 14xx torque. Not only does it run good, it looks good too.

Haha, I figured the PBJ reference would draw you out Mike. Thanks for the info. I need to check the mounts.

Joe was tuning the big turbo truck. He told me that the VEC is maxed out and with an AEM the truck could probably make 1600 rwhp.:eatpop:

Guess Justin will need to use my tuner. Donovan doesn't know how to tune an AEM....

The TT is coming along great. Had intake, fuel rails....everything polished and dropped off to be "transparent" painted over the polished alum. Did that yesterday. Setting up 7 inch LCD screen on dash to monitor 5 gauges. I will be able to scroll through 12 different functions to watch everything. Install to start next week. We wanted to get everything before we started. I'll let you know.

Second this. I did mine not too long ago as well and it seemed to quiet down the rattling noise.

you may also pull the shifter and make sure nothing is loose in there
I've never had mine off, but I know most cars have a bushing in the linkage that can break and cause rattling and sloppy feel
