Back at the Nürburgring, the hot Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1 (http://www.autoblog.com/2008/08/19/autoblog-first-drive-2009-corvette-zr1/) has just ripped four seconds off its claimed 7:26 lap (http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/09/candd-performs-first-instrumented-testing-of-corvette-zr1/). The new time, with Jan Magnussen at the wheel, is a claimed 7:22.4 for the full 12.93-mile loop. While the number is pretty bloody fast, it is still .3 seconds off the time earned by the Dodge Viper ACR (http://www.autoblog.com/2008/08/27/unofficial-dodge-viper-acr-laps-ring-in-record-7-22-1-w-video/) (ouch, those three tenths really have to hurt!). We take these lap times with a grain of salt, as we've yet to see everyone on the 73-turn course under the same conditions, and with officially certified timing equipment. Again, so you don't have to Google the competition's best-claimed Ring times yourself, here they are: Porsche GT2 - 7:32, Nissan GT-R - 7:29, Corvette ZR1 - 7:22.4 and the Dodge Viper ACR - 7:22.1. Thanks for the tip, Xeyad!

Phenomenal time for sure, HOWEVER, put the ACR in the hands of someone who has more than 5 laps in it under their belt and watch what happens! The 7:22 in the ACR had several seconds left in it.
Still, props to the GM boys! I bet they are pissed tho - missed out by 0.3 seconds  and I bet they didn't miss 2 shifts

Kudos to the vette, really.
I do think both these cars are outstanding, but how much time can be made up by a good driver who is familiar with the course, AND familiar with the car? ALOT...me thinks.
How much time can be considered as a good margin enough to say one is better than the other when you do have this driver factor to consider?
Weather, tires, track conditions, traffic (are these runs made with nobody else on the track?)...etc.
I lay awake at night, and ponder these things.:leaving:

It should still be noted that these times are logged unofficially and on top of that they are rolling starts. If it were up to me I would get all of the cars out there on the same day, same conditions, and let them leave 2 minutes apart from a dead stop. That would settle this little battle :yep:

I think GM and DC need to each give me a test car to drive around daily for a couple years...this will settle it all...in my mind at least.:leaving:
On a side note, did anybody see that TopGear episode where that chick drove that minivan around the ring? She was passing bad ass cars left and right, including a crotch rocket...fuggin crazy...that bish was amazing.

Let's hope by this time next year there still are a Corvette ZR-1 and a Viper ACR still around to do the Der Ring des Nibelungen.
And may the Viper ACR prevail! :nana:

Great vid. I have seen that before. Funny enough I think that track is one of the tracks that was on the Gran Tourismo game for Play Station 2.:D
