NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Chrysler Group LLC has reversed course and decided not to sell off its V-10 powered Dodge Viper sports car business. The car will remain in production after this year, the automaker announced Friday.
The Viper will be produced "though 2010 and beyond," a Chrysler spokesman said.
Chrysler had announced last summer that it would sell the Viper business and would not produce anymore Viper cars after this year. Ultimately, Chrysler later said, the carmaker did not receive any bids that met its requirements.
The Viper brand and the plant that makes the car were taken over by the "new" Chrysler, now called the Chrysler Group, that recently emerged from bankruptcy.
The Viper is a high-priced, limited production performance car. It is powered by a massive 8.4-liter, 600 horsepower V-10 engine and has a price tag that starts at about $90,000.
The car was originally introduced in the 1992 model year, and only about 25,000 have been sold since then.
But the car became an important marketing centerpiece for Chrysler's Dodge brand.
"We're extremely proud that the ultimate American-built sports car with its world-class performance will live on as the iconic image leader for the Dodge brand," said Mike Accavitti, president and chief executive of Chrysler's Dodge brand in a prepared statement.
The Chrysler Group is owned by a combination of the Italian automaker Fiat, the U.S. government, the United Auto Workers union's retiree trust and the Canadian and Ontario governments.

I'm not all that excited. All this means is they couldn't sell it. They will finish off what there is left to build while still trying to sell it and eventually let it die.

I am cursed with the ability to recognize bullshit when I see it. Read this and tell me where your V12 or even a V10 is going to fit.

I am not optimistic about Chrysler surviving as a company. Any business run by the government and labor unions has no chance.

I dont want to see a v12. Keep the V10 tradition and make the car a bit lighter with traction control. Last bring back the GTS styling..

If you like, Fog Horn Leg Horn, I will submit to a square inch hair follicle count comparison between your head and mine. I will put my GTS up against your Smokey and The Bandit Camaro on the outcome. Deal?

Not true. There are precedents all around the world - if not in your country.

They may not be efficient, but they can work.

Ultimately there is nothing a union can do that a government cannot over-ride - by force if necessary. The US is so far passed the point of no return as a socialist power elite (regardless of which party rules) it is a minor step to intervene if they decide to keep the wheels rolling.

The USSR had a constitution too, it was about as useful as the USA one is becoming.

Nothing wrong with having traction control. If you dont want it then press the button and keep it off. With that said, Its a good thing to have IMO especially if you do track events..

While I can see your point, I still disagree that the Viper should ever be equipped with something of the sort. As far as racing goes, traction control ultimately takes away from driver to driver competition. It's the sole reason F1 has become so mundane, boring, and nearly predictable. The most seasoned driver is brought to the level of the FNG... It's like the "No child left behind" policy, but for racing. It's the ultimate restrictor plate analogy.

Also, any application of TC should be automatically in the OFF mode and selected when desired. Not the other way around.

Your comparing apples to oranges here ( street car vs race car) (professional race car driver vs the average joe). Majority of the folks who go out on track events just want to have fun in a safe manner, and not wreck their cars. Sometimes it can rain on a track day to. So having the optional TC would be great..

Just in luck! There is a car made for those folks who enjoy the tamer side of putting around the track. It is called Corvette, and while a wildly successful program, wreaks of feminism.

Those who own the Viper should be fully aware of their limitations while simultaneosly understanding the car's expectations, both on and off the track. Those who can't conform have no business owning one and those who wish to have a tamer snake have no clue to start with on what seperates Viper from the rest. That's my opinion, anyway...

No Man, you are correct. Anything the union has to do with is a sinking ship. I have to deal with the union from time to time and it is like trying to work with a bunch of spoiled teenage brats. All they want to do is whine and preach labor laws when it comes time to work.

I was joking about the V-12. I would like to see 680hp and 200 less pounds. I dont care about traction control, but I do want CRUISE CONTROL!!!:D I seriously doubt we see anything past 2010.

The Viper is dead. CAAP reopend to finish whatever is left. Once the parts are gone, so is the car. Another cycle just like in the early 70's. NoMan is right on this one, feds are tightening the screws.....
